Welcome to Edessa. See you around the world.

After 3 intense days of lectures, excursions, social programmes and CESH spririt, the 18th CESH Congress Conference is (sadly) over.

We would like to thank all of the participants who attended, including the participants who joined us on Edessa Water Night Route Day.

The speakers who enriched our minds over the past week. The scientific committee who has helped us in so many ways this past year.

The active paricipants who gave light to hidden corners and presented their research.

Our sponsors and partners, without whom the Congress would not be possible. But most of all, our dedicated CESH Congress Team who have worked so hard these past few months, and gave so much during the week.

See you in Florence, 2015.

Next CESH Congress - XIX Florence

October 15th, 2014

The study of Sports in Education from antiquity to modern times is the main focus of interest of the XVIII International Congress of the European Committee for Sports History (CESH). The main goal is the analysis of how sports were used in the service of education through time. Historical study of this topic will shed light on and deepen understanding of the social, cultural, political, economic and religious factors which influenced the adoption of sports in education, as well as the evolution of formal physical education through the centuries. The Congress wants to stimulate wide participation and the exchange of ideas amongst specialists and interested scholars from across Europe and beyond.

Some open-themed sessions on ANY sports history topic will also be run, selected by the Scientific Committee from amongst the best submitted abstracts. There is limited space for these so they must be delivered in one of the three main European academic languages: English, French or German. CESH would particularly welcome offers of complete sessions of three presenters on the same topic.

The Congress will take place from 16 to 18 October 2014 in the Eastern Mediterranean, at the Waterfalls Park - Water Museum of Edessa, in northern Greece. The city has a long history. It was well-known in Greek and Roman times, and situated on the Via Egnatia, which linked the civilisations of the eastern and western world. By the late nineteenth century it was a major textile manufacturing centre. Participants will have the opportunity to visit some of its important tourist sites, including those associated with Philip II of Macedonia and his son Alexander the Great. Edessa can easily be reached by air, via its nearest airport Thessaloniki – SKG.

We hope that this XVIII International Congress of the European Committee for Sports History will provide a powerful opportunity for high-level inspiration, reflection and scientific dissemination. We cordially invite all interested researchers, scholars and specialists to actively participate. We look forward to welcoming you to Edessa, Greece.

You are welcome to Edessa.
